Dryed Islands
A cycle takes place in the work of Sonia Guggisberg. It is a cycle of water that, having sprung from a water table, flows on, spills, evaporates, and floods the exhibition venue. Most often, this water is created by light - in videos projected onto space - and it heralds an imminent disappearance resulting from an environmental crisis. Here, both light and water are elements that guide the senses; they promote interaction, dialogue, and encounter. In Sonia Guggisberg’s poetics, light and water become art materials that intervene in urban spaces (of high symbolical value or historical interest) in a quest to restore collective instances and activate social practices.
While addressing the environmental crisis as an expanded concept, Sonia Guggisberg develops a transversal thought that relates art and life. Her micropolitical actions, perfectly legible within Felix Guattari’s concept of The Three Ecologies - the environment, the socius, and the psyche - cast beams of light on diverse ways of living on our planet, both in the context of socioenvironmental changes and in the enrichment of life and subjectivity.

Um ciclo percorre a obra de Sonia Guggisberg. São águas que brotam de um manancial subterrâneo, correm, vazam, evaporam, inundam todo o espaço expositivo. Quase sempre são águas feitas de luz – vídeos projetados no espaço –, anunciando um desaparecimento iminente, provocado por uma crise ambiental. Tanto a luz quanto a água são, aqui, elementos condutores de sentidos, promovendo interação, diálogos, encontros. Luz e água, na poética de Sonia Guggisberg, são matérias de ações artísticas que intervêm em espaços urbanos (de alto valor simbólico ou interesse histórico), buscando a recomposição de instâncias coletivas e a ativação de práticas sociais perdidas.
Ao trabalhar a crise ambiental como um conceito ampliado, Sonia Guggisberg desenvolve um pensamento transversal que relaciona meio ambiente, arte e vida. Perfeitamente legíveis, dentro do conceito das três ecologias de Félix Guattari – a ecologia ambiental, a ecologia social e a ecologia mental -, suas ações micropolíticas lançam focos de luz sobre as maneiras de viver no planeta: tanto no contexto das mudanças socioambientais como no enriquecimento dos modos de vida e da subjetividade.

In the video installation Ilhas Secas the water stops being real to be virtual. The images captured in the Guarani Aquifer springs, one of the largest underground reservoirs in the world, are reproduced on mounds of sand and small rocks. It is a reflection on the problem of water shortage and its misuse on the planet. Water is a heritage of life to be preserved, but even the population knows that it is a fundamental source, misuse and disrespect remains. Today there are almost 750 million people in the world without access to potable water but the crisis grows in greater proportions.
Ilhas Secas is a work that is going through different countries in the exhibition Aesthetics and Sustainability: Examples Following the invitation of the German curator Adrienne Goehler.
Na videoinstalação Ilhas Secas a água deixa de ser real para ser virtual. As imagens captadas em nascentes do Aquífero Guarani, uma das maiores reservas subterrâneas do mundo, são reproduzidas em cima de montes de areia e pedra. Trata-se de uma reflexão sobre o problema da falta d’água e do mal-uso desta no planeta. A água é um patrimônio a ser a ser preservada, porém, mesmo sabendo que ela é uma fonte fundamental de vida, o mau uso e o desrespeito permanecem. Existem, nos dias de hoje, quase 750 milhões de pessoas no mundo sem acesso a uma fonte de água potável mesmo assim a crise cresce em proporções maiores.
Ilhas Secas é um trabalho que está itinerando por diferentes países na exposição “Estética e Sustentabilidade: Exemplos a Seguir” a convite da curadora alemã Adrienne Goehler.
